In the south of Chennai, Velachery is a commercial and residential town and is the largest commercial area in South Chennai. North-west Guindy, north-eastern IIT Madras surrounds it. Due to the IT sector development in South Chennai, the district's growth over the last decade can be cited. The whole of Velachery draws a fine balance between the old and the new Chennai and is a growth and development phenomenon.
Velachery mostly has clay and hard rock fields. Historically, the lake Velachery was approximately 250 acres, with ancient temples of Selliamman and Narasimhar at its south edge. There were thousands of acres south of Velachery, made of grass of rough elephants and swamps. The region was also called Kazhiveli, as permitted rainwater and catchment. Six natural spring aquifers enabled a recharge of the groundwater table. The marshland was also a refuge for the migratory birds and residents. At the outset, the marshland all but vanished in the last decades of the 20th century due to accelerated growth and invasion.
The warmest month is May with 37°C (98°F) average highest temperature. January is the coldest month and has an average temperature of up to 29°C. The wettest month is November.
The Park Town MRTS Suburban Train - taking the subway to Velachery Terminal and Central Suburban Station - takes about 45 minutes. Ola/Uber or short track Cabs may also be opted for. May also select the MTC (city bus) routes A51,1G, or E51 (boarding stop near General Hospital). The journey time is based on the conditions of traffic & service duration.
The infrastructure is one of the main reasons why Velachery is a residential draw. Though most of the Velachery regions are vulnerable to flooding, substantial investments have been made in improving the local stormwater drainage network. The company has also invested in road and rail links from the central business districts of Chennai to Velachery.
Bus services run by MTC make Velachery well connected to the rest of the world. The bus
Terminus of Vijayanagar is the largest and biggest stand in the town of Velachery, and buses
run to different parts of the town from there. There are three main streets: Velachery Main
Road, Velachery Bypass Road, and Taramani Link Road. The junction of Vijayanagar is one of
the largest in the district.
Via the Velachery MRTS railway station, Velachery is well linked by a large rail line (Indian gauge) to the city's rest. The Indian Railways run the regular EMU services.
