Sirsi is a town and hilly area in the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka, India. During the Sonda Dynasty, Sirsi was also known as Kalyanapattana. Sirsi is also regarded as the "Gateway to Malenadu" or the "Gateway to the Western Ghats."

Sirsi, with a population of 155,078, is a popular tourist destination. It is Malenadu's largest city, a major commercial centre, and a business hub. The closest airports are in Hubli and Belgaum, both about 2.5 hours and 5 hours drive from Sirsi. Belgaum is connected to Bangalore by road, and Hubli is connected by air to Bangalore, Mangalore, Chennai, Jabalpur, and Mumbai. Dabolim Airport in Goa is the closest international airport.

Sirsi is linked to other areas of the state by a network of state highways. The Ministry of Transport, Government of India, has approved two National Highways that will pass through Sirsi, namely Yellapur-Sirsi-Talguppa and Kumta-Sirsi-Haveri, to be built and maintained by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Sirsi is connected to the district headquarters of Dharwad, Mangalore, Udupi, Haveri, Belgaum, and Shimoga, which are all nearby. The state corporation operates a bus system that connects all major cities and towns in Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Goa.

Talguppa and Kumta are the closest rail stations. Sirsi is 54 km away from Talguppa. Haveri Railway Station is approximately 76 kilometres (47 miles) from Sirsi and has rail connections to many major cities, including Hubli, Davangere, Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune, Salem, Madurai, and Tirunelveli. The Talguppa railway links Bengaluru to Sagar in Karnataka. The Kumta railway connects Kochi and Mumbai between Mangaluru and Karwar. Hubli, the Zonal Headquarters of the South Western Railway district, is the main railhead.

Art and Culture

Yakshagana is a traditional dance-drama performed in Uttara Kannada, Shivamogga, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, and Kasaragod of Karnataka. There are many Yakshagana artists in and around Sirsi, and it is often performed there. Traditionally, Yakshaganas began late at night and lasted all night. Himmel is formed by Bhagavatha and background musicians who play Chande and Maddalena. The actors create the actors who dress up in colourful costumes and play different roles in the plot. Yakshagana is also known as Aata in Konkani and Kannada. Yaksha-Gana means the music (Gana) of a Yaksha. Yaksha-Gana translates as a Yaksha's song (Gana). Yakshas were an exotic tribe mentioned in ancient Indian Sanskrit literature. Holi is celebrated in Sirsi with a one-of-a-kind Carnival. The "Bedara Vesha" folk dance is done during the nights, starting five days before the actual festival day. Every other year, the town hosts the festival, which draws a massive crowd from all over India over five days.
