independence, Hyderabad served as the capital of the princely state of Hyderabad, which
hosted the British Residency and cantonment. Hyderabad was famed for its pearl business
until the 19th century, and was known as the "City of Pearls" and the sole Golconda Diamonds
trade centre in the world. Many of the ancient and traditional bazaars in the city are still
open. Hyderabad attracted significant Indian scientific, manufacturing, educational, and
financial organisations due to its strategic location between the Deccan Plateau and the
Western Ghats, as well as its industrialisation during the twentieth century.
