Kalapet, or Kalapettai, is a town and enclave in the Union Territory of Puducherry, India. It was annexed by the French in 1703 and has been a part of the Union territory ever since. It forms a part of the Pondicherry province of the Pondicherry district of the territory. The bordering areas are Marakkanam (TN) on the North, Kottakuppam (TN) on the South, Aurovile (TN) on the West, and Bay of Bengal on the East. Kalapet is spread across an area of about 20 square kilometers and is situated at an altitude of 3 m above sea level. According to the 2001 census, Kalapet had a population of 71,000. The climate of Pondicherry is classified as tropical wet and dry similar to that of coastal Tamil Nadu. Summer lasts from April to early June, when maximum temperatures may reach 41 °C. The average maximum temperature is 36 °C. Minimum temperatures are in the order of 28–32 °C. This is followed by a period of high humidity and occasional thundershowers from June till September. The northeast monsoon sets in during the middle of October, and Pondicherry gets the bulk of its annual rainfall during the period from October to December. The annual average rainfall is 1,355 millimeters or 53 inches. Winters are very warm, with highs of 30 °C and lows often dipping to around 18–20 °C.

By Air : Pondicherry Airport is located at Lawspet, an Assembly Constituency in the union territory of Pondicherry. It has direct flights to Hyderabad, Bengaluru operated by SpiceJet Airlines.

By Rail : Puducherry (Pondicherry) is connected by train to Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata, and Mumbai, as well as other important cities such as Kanyakumari, Hyderabad, Nagpur, Bhubaneswar, Bengaluru, Visakhapatnam, and Mangalore. Moreover, VM/Villupuram Junction which is at a distance of around 24 miles i.e.40 km(both by rail & road) is connected to several other Indian Cities.
