Baranagar, formerly Baranagar, is a town on the northern fringes of Kolkata in the Indian
state of West Bengal. It is a part of the North 24 Parganas district and is covered by the
Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority. It has a population of 245,213, with female and
male people of 119,026 and 126,187, respectively. The area is 7.12 sq kilometers long.
Baranagar is best known for the Indian Statistical Institute, an institution of national
importance devoted to researching, teaching, and applying statistics, natural science, and
social sciences. Baranagar is a major industrial center for the manufacture of agricultural
and industrial machinery, chemicals, situated on the bank of the holy Ganga river. One of
the famous temples, the Dakshineshwar temple, is another asset of this city.
