Bahour is a town, Commune, Taluk, and Assembly Constituency in the Union Territory of Puducherry, India. It consists of four non-contiguous areas, including three of the nine true enclaves of Puducherry. Bahour is spread across an area of about 91.04 square kilometers and is situated at an altitude of 11 m above sea level. As per the 2011 Census of India report of the Bahour Revenue Village, the total population at Bahour ranges to around 10927 persons with 5406 Male and 5521 female populations. It is home to the second-largest and perhaps the oldest irrigation lake in the region- the Bahour Eri. The lake has been in existence since the Chola period. Bahour also has reports of lignite deposits but it is not exploited due to its proximity to the sea and the likelihood of seeping seawater, adulterating the groundwater. It is a major access point for villages south of Puducherry and forms the southern border to the Union territory. The city is also known as the ‘rice bowl of Puducherry’ since the area is suitable for paddy (rice) cultivation.

Climate

The climate of Pondicherry is classified as tropical wet and dry similar to that of coastal Tamil Nadu. Summer lasts from April to early June, when maximum temperatures may reach 41 °C. The average maximum temperature is 36 °C. Minimum temperatures are in the order of 28–32 °C. This is followed by a period of high humidity and occasional thundershowers from June till September. The northeast monsoon sets in during the middle of October, and Pondicherry gets the bulk of its annual rainfall during the period from October to December. The annual average rainfall is 1,355 millimetres or 53 inches. Winters are very warm, with highs of 30 °C and lows often dipping to around 18–20 °C.
